This standard goes back to the beginning of the 20th century where processes like the ammonia synthesis which combined high pressure with high temperature, necessitated a new standard for vessels, pipes and fittings.
Up to now there are still several brown field plants which run reliably for several decades as well as a few niches, like Citral production, in which the IG-standard is the preferred choice.
